I very much like Taika as a director and actor and he seems like a delightful person. But I have to admit even the stuff of his that I really like i.e. What We Do In the Shadows, Hunt for the Wilderpeople, he's still riding a knife's edge between endearingly quirky and annoyingly cloying. The mix of the latter with Nazi Germany just really didn't come together, I think at root I just don't find the central joke of a wacky Hitler to be that funny. Not a disaster since I can see what Taika is going for in showing indoctrination from the POV of a child, but I'd prefer it were the contrast sharper with the real horrors it's hiding.
