"It's like there's this black cloud hanging over us..."
The first trailer for Us was one of the creepiest that I've seen in a while, but I couldn't tell from it what it was going to be about. The second trailer didn't give us any more information than the first, but it definitely heightened the WTF? factor a bit more. It also made me think, after seeing the trailer before nearly every movie I went to see in the last several months and the commercial multiple times a day, that the film would never live up to that trailer. But it does and then some.
I won't give anything away because Us really is an outstanding horror film and it deserves to be seen knowing as little as possible about it, but I can say that it's all in the trailer. We just didn't have any idea how to interpret it correctly. It goes so far beyond what the typical horror film even attempts. We're lucky to have Jordan Peele indulging his scary side.
Lupita Nyong'o has never been better in my eyes. She gives both characters that she plays such depth of emotion that I felt for both of them, regardless of their motivations. Winston Duke is fun in a very different role from that he played in Black Panther. He's got great comic timing and lets a little of the stress out just prior to it being ramped up even higher. Both kids are impressive and hopefully will be around for quite some time. Everyone does a fantastic job in their dual roles.
I can't wait to see what Peele comes up with next.
