Call Me by Your Name

Call Me by Your Name ★★★★½

2017 REVIEW #186

This movie is hyped for the wrong reasons. Not to be blunt, but most of the hype you're seeing and that I've seen for this film is from white girls feeding off of white gay men dynamics. Even if the majority of the film doesn't include this. You'll see it anywhere.

I'll be honest, it made me uneasy! I didn't want to contribute to that hype but I also didn't want to hate the film either if it was good -- which it is, don't get me wrong. I just wanted to form my own opinion.

This movie is misunderstood. You have to understand it for what it is, not what you really want.

CALL ME BY YOUR NAME is beautiful, the performances are splendid, the cinematography is rich, the location fulfilling, the aesthetics lovely, the story worthwhile. While you can tell it's majorly an adaption, the writing pulls through. It has a subtle magic about it... just not the kind of magic that would sweep me away in the theater. It didn't. I was disappointed. But it still sticks with me, and I'm still thinking about it. It still has a magic, even if not the kind I wanted.

It's worth the watch. Seriously. Timothee and Armie both kill the shit out of their roles! It's incredibly deep. Just don't get invested for the wrong reasons.
