Caleb O’s review published on Letterboxd:
A great adventure film. Given how much I love the modern iteration of Kong (seriously, Kong: Skull Island rips) I thought I should check out the initial movie. It takes a bit to get going, but once they reach Skull Island, the action barely stops. Kong kidnaps Anne, and the crew pursue, each encountering various stop-motion foes along the way. Something that surprised me was how Anne didn’t romanticise Kong—every scene with him she’s screaming and in genuine peril. I liked that the film-maker was obviously a bit of a scumbag (something Peter Jackson’s remake heightens with Jack Black) in the way he was downplaying the dangers. The stop-motion stuff looks very cool, and is very impressive for its time. Also of its time: a whole lotta sexism and racism!
