Shutter Island ★★★½

Manages to tether filmmaking, psychotherapy, masculinity and mid-century American trauma together in a remarkably seemless fashion, cloaked in appealing pulp so as to allow Scorsese to traverse this spectrum of thematic interest freely. Scorsese asserts the importance of midcentury American genre film as a means of assuaging the traumas of then contemporary life while also delineating the way n which they tempered and corrupted human development, spinning us off into a bizarre, postmodern future.
