The 2nd Annual Live 'On Cinema' Oscar Special 2014
I'm only four seasons into the On Cinema-verse and I know it will get weirder as the seasons go by, but based on the first few seasons, the "Tim Heidecker" character is possibly the most realistic 21st Century character ever put on any kind of screen, big or small.
He is the perfect media consumer, entirely uncritical and willing to watch whatever is put in front of him by the corporate overlords of popular culture. He is also desperately hungry…

I feel like it's worth mentioning that this is the first movie I watched after coming out as trans

The 7th Annual Live 'On Cinema' Oscar Special 2020
I’m furious, for years I’ve been a devout Greghead, defending all his actions to the legions of vitriolic Timheads with passion and pride, but after this catastrophe I simply cannot bring myself In good conscience to justify his behaviour and complete lack of professionalism any longer. Can he not see Tim is having the happiest day of his life? Yet he feels the need to interfere in matters that don’t involve him, he still feels the need to bring up…

Laurence drowned her baby in the ocean.
"They say I'm intelligent. Then why did I do it?"
The police immediately looked to the immigrant's origins for answers. "Africa" is said over and over again like someone was dying to say Dark Continent. The prosecutor called this out, not because it's racist, but because it planted the seed of "sorcery" as a defense. Which is racist.
Their own moral superiority as a hint,…

RRR 2022
exists in a complex political context that has been somewhat obfuscated by the anti-British colonialist story around which its epic 3 and a half hours revolves - I feel like I should say I’m far less than qualified to unravel that, better and more knowledgeable writers already have! but the theatrics themselves are astonishing
my mind kept going back to John Woo with conflict between duty and an intense, melodramatic brotherhood, as well as the giddy exuberance of its set…

Elvis 2022
Regardless of what actually happened, history will continue to sprint forward, swallowing itself up and shitting it back out as a demented reflection of the ever changing present moment. For the rest of my life all Ancient Greek epics will be done with Received Pronunciation because of the success of a few British epics that were made thousands of years after the oral epics were written down. You have no control over it. Future technologies may find a way to…

Elvis 2022
With abortion rights all in the news, that was the first analogy that came to mind while watching Baz Luhrmann's Elvis. Planned Parenthood v. Casey established the "undue burden" standard for abortions that essentially stated that abortion was still an inarguable right, so states could not place any restriction that significantly inhibited access to it. The plurality opinion considered laws like the ones that required parental consent for minors and waiting periods as applicable to this.
Another restriction was "informed…

To Leslie 2022

People, you, me, we all go off script. We just do.
That's why we have each other. We look out for each other. That means we support each other while we hold each other accountable for our shit.
I won't always do the right thing, but I promise to unconditionally own it when I fuck up. (This might take a minute sometimes.)
I promise to always support you unconditionally when you fuck…

The Menu 2022
Another widget film conceived and carried out in conference room Zoom calls by film manufacturers and agents.
This checks the Rich People are Stupid/Gullible/Lazy box along with the Dram-orror box where you start with a filmic version of drama and end up with a campfire ghost story modern-day episode of that 1950's Hitchcock TV series.
Theo's point that nobody who made this film believes anything in it is the most likely scenario I can suss out of this popcorn muncher.
Trendy. Forgettable. Boring.

Argentina, 1985 2022

Causeway 2022
This is a perfectly fine and touching Sundance movie elevated five floors by two of the best actors to emerge in the past 20 years.
Jennifer Lawrence and Bryan Tyree Henry are just major, major talents who rarely misstep, even when the movies aren’t great. This one just so happens to be very solid, even though the third act kind of tries to force conflict where it wasn’t needed. The low-key hang-out-and-heal vibe was more than enough to prove the…
