This is, at best, an A23 movie.

Wonderful how virtually every element of this movie works so well, it's hard to imagine an improvement.

    Beautifully shot. Very nice music.

Amazing how the nonprofessional actors who play most of the supporting characters fill the screen with such life, humanity, and beauty.

Frances McDormand gives an understated, moving, compassionate, and justly lauded performance.

This one is worth your attention; it's not something to play in the background, at least the first time. Give it your heart and it will give a lot to appreciate.

A lot of people have complained that the story's weakness is how it all hinges on some simple, stupid things that could have been cleared up easily. I guess for me that's actually part of the film's poignant tragedy; in real life people do (or fail to do) simple stupid shit all the time, and it frequently does eventually lead to terrible consequences.

A quiet, slightly quirky look at life in small-town Holland. It’s a bit slow but has its moments. This was supposedly the first Dutch film screened in the US and received an Academy Award nomination for Best Foreign Language Film, so worth seeing by those really interested in film history of that sort.
