I don't know if I can describe the feeling that I had while watching this. Hope mixed with despair. Love and dread. Belonging and isolation. It made me feel so warm, but so empty at the same time. I guess this is the perfect example of a bittersweet movie. This was hard to watch, but I was also completely enthralled. It may be the most authentic depiction of America that I have seen thus far. These characters literally look like the kids who went to my high school (not a great school). It's so immersive I felt I was traveling with them the entire time. Simply a raw and honest story about the pitfalls of the American Dream told masterfully through Andrea Arnold's gorgeous direction. The catharsis that I felt when they finally played the song at the end was one of the greatest payoffs a movie has ever given me.
