I would say I have a pretty pessimistic outlook on love, but this trilogy brought out my optimistic side. Jesse and Celine's chemistry made me want to believe in real love. However, I was not prepared for the emotional turmoil "Before Midnight" introduced at all. While the previous installments offered a love story of two soulmates ostensibly too perfect to be true, this movie presented the reality of what a relationship can be. I was really caught off guard by how the plot developed. It's heartbreaking but necessary. It sort of feels like a different movie, but also quite similar to the others. I kind of like how it took some time to return to the traditional structure of Jesse and Celine one-on-one to reflect how their lives have transformed over time. The dialogue is just as sharp as ever. Also, the performances might be the best here. It's still amazing. It just made me really sad.
