One of the things I love about Joe Dante is his genuine desire to entertain his audience, which never comes across as forced or desparate. Here the effect isn't scary, it's downright charming. This is a pretty standard b-movie, but there are a few really great moments: a stop motion/animated creature (what was with that thing anyway?), the noise of the swarming piranhas and the fish themselves are totally hilarious, as well as a GREAT shot of a camp counselor being dragged out underwater. Kids of 1970's/80's Texas will probably get a kick out of seeing the old Aquarena Springs, with a cameo from Ralph the swimming pig!!
I dunno, it's a movie from 1978 about killer piranhas, what else do you want?
