The Umbrellas of Cherbourg

The Umbrellas of Cherbourg ★★★★

I think I managed to kill two birds with one stone watching Umbrellas. It's both my first Jacques Demy + French New Wave film that I've seen (I feel like I probably should have started with The 400 Blows but oh well), and it was heartwrenching. So many storytelling techniques in this movie feel so fresh and unique. The singing-only narrative, how part of the story was told just through colors alone, every costume/wallpaper/hallway bursting with colors that revealed the characters changing feelings and motivations. I'ts only 90 minutes long, but it feels like an epic where the characters are so drastically different by the end from where they started, you feel like you aged with them. Anyways, love is fake and I'm sad.
