Dune ★★★★

Denis Villenueve's Dune manages to deliver truly visceral visuals, while also weaving one of popular fiction's most intricate novels into a (mostly) comprehensible viewing experience.

Most of the frames that comprise this film simply bleed scifi. The designs and attention to detail are spectacular, and I found myself more interested in simply taking it all in my gaze than trying to analyze the film's plot. Hans Zimmer's score effectively allows the viewer to just watch a really long music video if that is their wish.

There are definitely moments where the plot is a bit clumsy, and the two-part nature makes this film hard to evaluate as an individual piece, seeing as it ends in what feels to be less than halfway through the narrative presented. The film also suffers a bit in its presentation of characters and material without explaining much of it, but exposition is the plot killer, so I couldn't really complain.
