Cartoonshi’s review published on Letterboxd:
The first half of this movie didn’t really have me on board, there were some neat story changes but there were also a lot of meh changes with absolutely atrocious pacing. HOWEVER, the second Shinji quite literally barged his way into the movie everything changed. The second half of this movie is nearly a direct improvement on the game’s story in nearly every department and I do NOT say that lightly. They reworked Ken so beautifully along with his relationship with Shinji, giving them time to bond before almost perfectly executing October 4th. Not to mention, while Strega were slapdashed into the plot like they were in the game, their claims of hypocrisy directed towards SEES actually effect more than just Junpei, including Makoto who's writing and personality is a far cry from the first movie and in the best way possible. Strega actually feel like interesting villains now because their actions and words have more of a long-standing impact on the narrative. The animation is also still absolutely gorgeous.
However most of my praises come from this movies second half, and while it absolutely CARRIES with how good it is, it doesn’t change the fact that the movie has some dreadful pacing problems, rushing Aigis and somehow even Koro into the plot, as well as some weird changes to the story. But if you stick with this movie until the halfway point it becomes a completely different experience and overall I walked away satisfied.
