Cassandra Reeves’s review published on Letterboxd:
Dan Gilroy is a good screenwriter. And like many other screenwriters he has decides that he wants to be a director too. He's not a bad director, to be honest, but the fact that he writes and directs his own stories is part of the problem. 'Cause when your write and direct your own stories, sometimes you can lose lucidity and detachment. And lucidity and detachment are the key to tell a good story, a great story.
The Nightcrawler e Roman J. Israel are good movies, but we can't say the same thing for Velvet Buzzsaw.
Velvet Buzzsaw is not a bad movie, but it's not a good movie either. It's confusing, heavy, unnecessarily twisted and maybe tries too hard to be something that it's not. The main mistake here is that Gilroy wanted so bad to do a horror film, but he couldn't leave at home his need of social criticism.
That's why this movie is somehow a missed opportunity. Too bad.
