    The plot hits a lot of familiar beats, making it kind of a dad movie, and the director leans on the beauty of the New Zealand scenery (and what he gets here IS beautiful) a little too much, but Winstone and Morrison have a muted, mutually-reserved-and-stoically admiring chemistry that suggests a good buddy movie in a different universe, and what the plot gives up in familiarity, it makes up for with interesting subtext, as a Maori fugitive and a Boer in exile bond over the deleterious effects of the British Empire on both men
