The Holy Mountain

The Holy Mountain ★★★★½

Okay. So. A lot to unpack here.

First off, this has got to be one of the most visually stunning films I have ever seen. The cinematography here is absolutely gorgeous, and the usage of color throughout this movie's runtime is phenomenal. But oh my god, let's talk about the elephant in the room. Holy shit is this movie like, REALLY fucking weird. But then again, I don't necessarily count that as a negative aspect, though. Though seemingly a tad pretentious at times, this film isn't weird without purpose. There are lots of dramatic exaggerations, analogies, and symbolism here that acts as a sort of microscope looking at our normalization of society, customs, and even religions as a whole. It's an in-depth dissection of how our human world has, at the end of the day, normalized certain evils that anyone else would find appalling and absolutely bizarre. In a similar sense, this film is technically about humanity and our world as a whole.

Or I dunno. Could all be just meaningless and pretentious garbage. Who knows. Maybe it's like "2001: A Space Odyssey" and you have to get completely stoned to REALLY enjoy it.
