Upgrade

Upgrade ★★★★½

After a crippling, life-altering accident, Grey (Logan Marshall-Green) receives a microchip implant, "STEM", which grants him a new set of combat abilities, and the keys to fulfilling his newfound revenge complex.

In 2004, Leigh Whannell (and James Wan) dominated Sundance and broke box office records with their overtly gruesome and intricate horror/thriller 'Saw', reinventing the horror genre on a shoestring budget, through embracing the most interesting and expansive elements of their initial concept.

In 'Upgrade' (originally titled "STEM"), Whannell has achieved the same on an even larger scale, presenting us with a sharp, cyberpunk action romp, which utilizes both its simplistic narrative structure, and its staggering concept to bring us 95 minutes of pure, practical fun with a dash of some dark, physical humor. 'Upgrade' is one of the year's best cinematic offerings yet.
