Midsommar

Midsommar ★★★½

Like Hereditary, I mistook this as being disappointingly empty at first glance, but this thing burrows deep in your skin and bears a number of fascinating layers I can't wait to pick apart with given time.

Unfortunately, it's also much more indulgent and less tight than Hereditary at an exhausting 2 hours and 23 minutes. Performances are all supremely effective, Aster remains a great visual stylist (more horror films that make daylight and pastel as oppressive and unnerving as shadows and darks, please) who somehow holds the key to Things That Upset Carol Grant, but I'm also worried that he can only make this one kind of movie and not evolve much past it.

Props to Jack Reynor for committing deeply to the thankless role of Worst Boyfriend Ever.
