Midsommar

Midsommar ★★★★

"Can't I get a detailed look without necessarily participating?"

The Director's Cut: A far superior film than the theatrical version simply through the mere virtue of being more comfortable in its rhythms, making for something less exhausting and more immersive. Added layers in the new scenes also make it more concise, thematically and emotionally, while retaining a better air of mystery and beguilement. I felt I better understood the cult's intentions and rituals while remaining just as if not more bewildered.

Still not sure this subject matter required this level of indulgence (men are bad lol), but there's a new layer briefly introduced here regarding the runes' connection to Nazism and it's making me feel this movie's more about race and whiteness, intentionally or otherwise, than it initially let on.
