Chad Fey’s review published on Letterboxd:
“Kick out the jams, motherfucker!”
Hadn’t watched this one in probably 25 years, when I saw it at a friends house. I was definitely too young to be watching it but it broke my little kid brain in the best way. No one was cooler than Slater and what he was saying was so vulgar and exciting, even if I didn’t know what half of it meant.
So after picking up the new Warner Archive blu, which is excellent by the way, I was stoked to revisit as an adult. Slater is great, the rest of the cast is great, it’s funny, it’s truthful, just as relevant today, if not more, and the soundtrack whips the most ass.
Pump Up The Volume belongs in conversation of the very best high school movies. It should be required viewing for every American teenager. The kids today need to see more movies like Pump Up The Volume, Heathers and Dazed and Confused, and less of the saccharine “made for the algorithm” crap that gets dumped on Netflix every week.
But hey, that just the opinion of a washed up old man in his mid 30s, so what the hell do I know.
