    Surprisingly caustic and noxious for a supposed romance, but perhaps that's my own fault for not expecting as much. Luckily the dialogue is savage enough to make up for the rather thin story, with nearly half the runtime devoted to flashbacks. Perhaps it works better on the stage, because there just doesn't seem to be enough here for a film. At least the ending is suitably grim.

    What if Primer had a largely improvisational screenplay and didn't attempt to obscure its narrative curlicues in scientific gobbledegook? The result would be something approximating this, a sci-fi mindfuck that doesn't feel like a mindfuck because of the grounded naturalism of both the characters and the dialogue. These eight adults interact with each other in a way that seems both scripted and spontaneous (a testament to both the performers and the director), and their reactions to the increasingly bizarre events…
