Jean-Luc Godard, undoubtedly one of the most influential filmmakers of the 20th century, does not waste a second in Breathless. The quick editing makes it so fast paced, it does not linger on anything for too long.
Breathless is such a fitting title. For the first 80 minutes of the film you dare not breathe as to not interrupt the characters. And at the ending you dare not breathe for the suspense and immersion that this has led up to.
Simple and straightforward, there is not grand metaphors here. Almost every message this film has is conveyed explicitly by one of the characters. Perhaps filmmaking in its purest form.
