I just don't know what I was expecting going into this, but I'm glad my expectations were still dashed even as the story progressed. It's an absolute oddity when you hear the plot (don't look it up beforehand though!!), but it's such a quiet and tender story at the same time. It is a film driven by emotion and that's what made Nicolas Cage the perfect lead for such a film. I think a lot of blockbuster missteps for Cage really soured our perception of his skills, but I'm glad he's been having a resurgence in some of his recent flicks where he cares about the material and the people care about his performance as well. Just a good fucking slow burning drama fusion thriller. Never takes you where you expect, but you're thankful for what you get along the way. One of the best of the year so far.
