our father, todd haynes, which art in heaven……

(deliciously histrionic, diabolical, i-can’t-believe-what-i-just-saw kind of assault of a movie. it allows itself to be perversely erotic but it is also pointedly aware of the abuse and exploitation at play here. haynes’ magnum opus, i think — and he made Carol. now, let’s together as a society get charles melton his oscar…robert downey jr. and ryan gosling can never in a million years do THAT.)

gael garcía bernal has an effortless sincerity to him that makes him so easy to root for in whatever context you throw him in. he is truly one of the greats, you know? and this is clearly made by someone who loves his filmography (motorcycles, pools, diners...), and that makes me so happy. i love gael's personal brand of intense commitment to flair and artistry. this was the perfect role for him.

i simply cannot overstate how monumental it was for me to see this movie back in 2019. i’m so, so happy that it aged incredibly well, and i can’t say that for some other superhero movies i liked in those formative years.

what i was so impressed with upon this rewatch is how the iconographies held up so well — all the visual representations of her power, inside and out, were so effective and affecting. i maintain my initial comment…

very mixed feelings on this one. so i walked into this worrying that there’s going to be too much leo and not enough lily, and well, yeah, that exactly. i watched a red carpet interview of christopher cote, an Osage consultant on the film, who said while he was appreciative of marty’s efforts representing his people, he wonders why the film wasn’t told from mollie’s perspective but that of her white, conniving husband. now that i’ve seen the film i…

overwhelming because this was the film i wanted to make when i was 16 — clearly i wouldn't have had the emotional maturity and creative sophistication for it back then, but this was the kind of heartache i was endlessly fascinated by. it was always the person who's not meant to be for me: the person not within your reach, the person to be locked away in your heart forever. many lines made me feel like all air were punched out of my lungs, but i'll leave you with this one: "i didn’t know liking your husband would hurt this much."

maybe god is...being at peace with the truth and thanking your teacher and dancing with whoever you want and bursting into tears because girlhood is beautiful and monumental and divine and it doesn't stop even when you become a mother.
