i could go on and on why i didn’t like this trilogy but i’m honestly too tired, i’m glad people like these movies and i really wish i did, even if there are some great things in its technicalities. i will say that the cinematography, vfx, and spectacle in this especially is phenomenal, and if matt reeves brings that kind of visual spectacle to The Batman then i will be more than happy. but god, what a fucking chore this was to sit through, and with its counterproductive direction that takes away its message, i really felt like i got nothing out of these movies.
this movie is trying to execute such a depressingly realistic message but turns it into nothing but a summer blockbuster. it really falls into the “show, don’t tell” criticism in that it tells us about animal cruelty but really fails to show the deeper meaning beneath it, with the paper-thin and uninteresting human characters, you can’t really compare them to the apes. the only time it really “shows” us this is through action scenes with slow-mo and an action movie-like…
