The Last Duel

The Last Duel ★★★½

(It took me two tries to get through this, seriously. I felt the first chapter dragging so much that I ended up dozing for a chunk of it. But I made the effort to go back and make sure I saw everything)

There’s obviously a lot of talented people involved here. I don’t have a single negative thing to say about the acting; but I do want to comment that Affleck is absolutely wild and so compelling in the strangest way.

The story structure is responsible for setting it apart from most historical dramas, yet also dragging down the film’s pace and contributing to the longer runtime. It also means that we catch some moments more than once, and that isn’t always welcome.

The low box office numbers are a shame, especially when there are big names attached. But there’s a chance that modern audiences just aren’t in the mood for this.
