The extra half star is just because it looks/feels so good. This is a fun movie, especially to see in theaters, and all I was expecting was a solid fun movie, but to be honest I was a little disappointed.
The Nice Guys felt too imbalanced to me- although this is definitely a comedy, it is also an action movie with a legitimate plot. The amount of times characters did things that were just insane was honestly too much for me (eg. leaving your daughter at home with a runaway that everyone is looking for/trying to kill while there has also been a threat from a hit man to kill your family).
I enjoyed the buddy-cop chemistry between Gosling and Crowe, but Gosling's character felt out of place to me; like an actual cartoon character in a semi-coherent movie, imo he was just too much. Maybe if his character was toned down a bit it would have been better?
Anyway, I had a good time, but for me this probably isn't joining the ranks of other good-time movies that are also good movies. This has nothing on Hot Fuzz.
**ps. had the thought during the movie that this is like the comedic anti-Chinatown. not sure if it can fully keep that title due to the ending, but did anyone else see the similarities?
