Drive My Car

Drive My Car ★★★★½

Now, that the mess that were the 94th Academy Awards are finally behind us and hopefully soon forgotten, I feel like checking back with some of the films from this year's awards race that kept lingering in the back of my head since I watched them, and none of them had me itching more for a re-watch than Drive My Car.

This time around, the film hit me even harder than the first time. Seeing these characters revealing more and more of themselves in the course of the film as they grew more comfortable with each other is more exciting to me than every single action scene in Spider-Man: No Way Home. Also, seeing the table reads and rehearsals of this multi-lingual version of Uncle Vanya, with actors knocking the table to indicate they have finished their line, is fascinating to watch.

The entire acting ensemble is terrific, and Hidetoshi Nishijima in particular is giving one of the best performances of the year.

Bumping the film up to four and a half stars for now. It's truly a terrific experience. And I should try to watch more films by Ryusuke Hamaguchi.
