Beyond the extraordinary style, this an astonishingly bizarre dramatic structure for a procedural in the way it plunges you into the mystery and mythos, gradually revealing it without much pathos at all. A lesser film would explain Lecter before introducing him, but Manhunter forces you to fester with him before even providing context. Something about this film gets under my skin in an indescribable way.
