Better than I think it had any right being. This probably should have been straight schlock, but a reliably committed performance from James Badge Dale, and some pretty decent direction from David Prior really elevates everything. I think the name is doing the movie a real disservice, because it invites comparisons to much lesser works. However, there are some issues, as would be expected from a first time director. The final act does start to veer into nonsense, and I wasn't completely satisfied with how everything wrapped up. There is also no denying that it is too long. Although, I do wish that more modern horror movies would slow down a little, take their time, and build some genuine tension, so in that respect The Empty Man was a welcome breath of fresh air.
