cant tell if the racism in this was deliberate...im always skeptical of white directors when it comes to these sort of things and i felt the same with fish tank. like the film makes no attempt to acknowledge star's blackness. she is surrounded by overt racists and the perpetrators are probably unaware of their racism or how being racist is wrong. the minor characters are all guilty of appropriation and star doesnt seem to be uncomfortable. is that the point? does krystal despise star because shes black or young or bc shes captured jake's attention or all three? i dont know what to think and arnold's direction seems very murky. but aside from tht it was a v interesting watch and nice debut from sasha lane. also the cinematography is stunning!
