Red Rocket

Red Rocket ★★★★½

Imagine if like the guy who made The Florida Project, remade the second half of Boogie Nights, with the screenwriter of Uncut Gems?

Director and Letterboxd god, Sean Baker focuses once again on the underbelly of America, telling stories you don’t often hear. Simon Rex plays a porn star moving back to Texas from LA. Super unlikable character, but an unbelievable transformation from a man best known for the Scary Movie sequels.

I don’t want to spoil much, because it was lovely going in blind, but I wouldn’t be surprised if this movie was somewhat divisive. Spike Lee seemed to love it but some old people left early, somewhat unsurprisingly. The film is intentionally icky, but hilarious in some very dark moments.

Great way to kick off my week at the Cannes film festival!
