I am loving what Sean Penn is laying down in this movie, he is just in an entirely different reality. Probably the most I’ve enjoyed him in decades. And the way PTA shoots that motorcycle scene like a war film …
I think Licorice Pizza went down a little smoother on the second go, without the false sense of danger and with a better sense of where the character arc is going. I still think the “Mikado” scenes are a major miscalculation, but less of a slap in the face when I at least better appreciate what PTA was trying (and, I think, failing) to convey. And the Jon Peters segment is still probably his best sustained set piece since the drug heist in Boogie Nights.
Moving this up to a full 8/10. PTA films ranked here.
