London Film Festival 2021 film #16
I really wanted to love this more as this kind of magic realism or even fantasy is the exact kind of thing that I want from a film. However I don’t know if this had as much to say as it could have; it’s clearly about grief but, and I hope this doesn’t sound too harsh, the whole ‘repressed grief from the loss of a child’ thing has been done too many times in cinema now. And while this is an original take visually and imaginatively it didn’t actually say anything new about that grief. That said I think this was really well filmed and I definitely appreciated the ending with the reveal of the ‘beast’, as well as the idea of nature taking back what’s owed to it.
