E.T. meets Saving Private Ryan in the silly but enjoyable Zone Troopers (1985).
The movie begins like a regular World War II movie with a group of American soldiers battling the Nazis somewhere in Italy. Then out of nowhere, the film turns into science fiction as the soldiers discover a spaceship that has crash-landed in the woods. The only survivor of the crash, a furry alien with big black eyes and who likes eating cigarettes, soon befriends the Americans and helps them fight the Nazis. It’s weird, it’s goofy, it’s cheap, but it’s also amusing and pretty entertaining.

Solid direction from Carpenter, but I found the main character played by Lauren Hutton to be very annoying in the first half of the movie.

Dark Age 1987
In Australia, a wildlife ranger and two Aboriginals hunt for a giant crocodile in Dark Age (1987). The Aboriginals believe that the creature is a “dreaming crocodile” known as a Numunwari and has a spiritual connection to them, and is almost impossible to kill.
I really enjoy killer crocodile movies and this is a really good one. It has almost the exact same structure as Jaws, but the Australian locations and the spiritual aspect make it really unique and interesting. It also features a pretty memorable and shocking scene of a little kid being chomped by the huge crocodile. -
Game Over 1989
This French movie is sort of a mixture of Die Hard and Home Alone, but it came out the year before Home Alone. I would be shocked if John Hughes and the makers of that movie were not directly influenced by this one. This is a dark and intense little horror gem with great cinematography and production design, with the huge castle-like mansion providing a great setting for the action.
