Critic Andrew Wyatt spotlights an under-the-radar gem from this year's SLIFF lineup: Fernando Trueba's coming-of-age drama Memories of My Father, based on a memoir by Colombian novelist, essayist, and cultural critic Héctor Abad Faciolince. Screening this Friday at 7:15 p.m. at the Plaza Frontenac Cinema.
"While Faciolince ('Quiquin' to his mothers and five sisters) is the protagonist, the feature is a conflicted but heartfelt love letter to the elder Héctor (Talk to Her’s Javier Cámara). Even during Quiquin’s inevitable period of adolescent rebellion, Memories of My Father is bursting with affection for Héctor Sr., a role model of non-toxic masculinity defined by his intellect, principles, and gentle, patient demeanor."
