Even if I don't connect fully with a given film, if said film can show me something I hadn't seen before, then I will probably think about it in favorable terms. The Death of Mr. Lazerescu for instance might not be a perfect film, but in no uncertain terms it portrays death more believably than any other film I've seen. The Ascent likewise tells a story and stories unfamiliar to thousands of films. The Ascent portrays with reasonable accuracy what goes on in the mind of the people faced with inescapable death at the hands of an enemy; first the loyal, then the incidental, then the divine, and finally the traitor. Something unusual is pulsing in the rhythms of the narrative of The Ascent.
