For what it’s worth I cried watching this movie. I don’t know, something about it just hit me really deep. LMM directed this but you honestly wouldn’t be able to tell; he reigns in his unique style and in doing so allows the story to tell itself, which is perfect because this tale in itself needs no heavy directorial motivation. I don’t know anything about Larson, but now I want to know more. Garfield has straight up the best male performance of the year I’ve seen so far, he’s not even involved in Oscar buzz but he absolutely should be, he EMBODIES this role and is immensely captivating. The songs are just wonderful, the ensemble as a whole carries, but most importantly the film has a genuine earnestness that makes it’s emotional bears feel earned and makes it’s characters feel relatable. I was going to call it the best movie of the year after walking out of the theater yesterday, a nights sleep has calmed me down a bit but it’s still absolutely fantastic.
