Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2 2000
A curious millennial time capsule. How does one follow a pop culture phenomenon so singular and effective as ‘The Blair Witch Project?’ Well, you apparently give into your self-conscious, grungy 90s pseudo-nihilism and have a big old horror-thriller party/rave with slick production value, constant flashbacks, MTV editing and a sexy cast. Nothing about this film is remotely scary, but it makes for a trashy, shallow good time and an excellent case study in an overzealous studio’s attempts to reflect and capitalize on a property whose craftsmanship and execution were so stunning and unprecedented that no one dared immediately imitate it.
