    The second film in the phase of Cronenberg's career where he REALLY wanted to be George A. Romero.

    Feels like two interesting ideas (a twist on a modern female vampire meets a super rabies outbreak) that got mashed together, never quite coalescing successfully. Plus, the base concept doesn't make a lick of sense (how exactly does a skin transplant give birth to an entirely new organ).

    Oh. So that's why everyone was in love with Barbara Streisand.

    I've now only seen three Peter Bogdanovich films in my lifetime (something I am fixing thanks to the work of Austin Film Society's month long tribute to the late great), but What's Up, Doc? might already stand as my favorite. An immediately likable, 100% sincere love letter to old Hollywood that leaves you with a smile on your face long after the credits roll.
