Cody’s review published on Letterboxd:
John Carpenter says that he sees this as a more mature, darker version of Escape from New York, when in reality, it’s just a watered down remake, but still manages to have some fun moments. Naturally, the low-budget CGI hasn’t aged well at ALL, but it does add to some of the camp of the film. With essentially the same plot as the previous film in the series, we follow a similar layout, leaving much of the film in the realm of predictability. The action is the same, just different characters (and some horrible trans representation as well) and different situations. It still has its moments though, and manages to keep you entertained throughout. I’m not as big of a fan of Escape from L.A. as some people are, but it’s still fun to see Carpenter do his first sequel, and step away from his typical horror work for something new.
