Midsommar ★★★

an interesting experiment in Asters own flexibility as a writer, one that sometimes really works and sometimes really doesn’t. everything before the title drop is very, very slow and honestly quite boring that it’s such a delight that it becomes okay quickly afterwards. it’s by far the funniest film of the year, even when it’s not trying to be. beyond will poulters incessant horniness being downright hilarious, some of the films more extreme moments are more comedic than they probably intend to be (the “mating” scene had me and my friends in absolute hysterics.) but beyond that, it is pretty entrancing in its own lush visuals and fucked up nature. pugh is ace, along with Reynor really giving it his all, especially in the final moments of the film. and damn, aster really went for bold visuals in broad daylight. this film is so close to being great that it sucks that the main dread of the film sometimes is watered down to “waiting for the scary shit to happen.” i’m going between a 2.5 or a 3 on this one, but i’ll lean into the latter for now. it may or may not drop in the future.
