The Devil All the Time

The Devil All the Time ★★

mostly just a lame excuse in miserablism, a film that’s gritty for the sake of being gritty and cruel for the sake of being cruel. the handling of sexual assault and suicide is often questionable and sometimes downright bad, which i was surprised at given Campos’ fairly mature handling of the latter in previous films. performances range from being cartoonishly over the top (which seems to be Pattinson’s forte for bad films at this point) to fine, i admire Holland’s attempt at doing something here (and i can’t even blame him for the lack of success, there’s absolutely no interiority to the characters) but i’d be lying if i said i could pick it out in a sea of a million other performances like it. i hope he does better in the future. in the end it’s just mostly boring, a cluttered mess, i’ll forget about it by next week
