Sands of Iwo Jima ★★★★

I am not sure how long it has been since I watched this movie....but it was like watching a brand new movie as I remembered almost nothing in the movie except for the final 5 minutes. In this one John Wayne plays Sgt. John M. Stryker, who is in charge of some young marines. Movie follows their training and their attack on two islands..the last being the battle of Iwo Jima.

Movie does an excellent job of using real footage and movie footage. Wayne has never been better in a role. He picked up his first Best Actor Oscar nomination for this movie....and it was well deserved. His Sgt. Stryker is a great movie character. Wayne gets to show a wide range of emotions in this one. The action is well done. The supporting roles are memorable as well....John Agar and Forrest Tucker especially shine.

Final thought: This is one of the better World War 2 movies out there....and one of the best John Wayne movies too. This one is ranked 3rd of 82 Wayne movies on my John Wayne Cogerson Movie Score table.
