Red Rocket

Red Rocket ★★★★½

Sean Baker is a really weird entity to me. Tangerine is one of my favorite movies ever, and although I respect it as a good film, I really did not like The Florida Project. So going into Red Rocket, I was unsure of how I was going to feel about it.

Needless to say, it's a fucking banger!

This type of film walks a very interesting and fine line of maintaining an objective lens, which is the most important thing to master in films with loathsome protagonists. Here, Baker makes sure to completely establish that Saber is an absolute shitbag, and lets us view the film from that viewpoint without any cheesy and emotional attempt to sway our thoughts about him. He just presents the situation and lets everything roll forward.

Everything about this is great. The performances, the cinematography, the editing, the story, literally everything being put on the screen is done exquisitely. This could have been a ten for me if Baker didn't go over the top on occasion with his choices, but that's just what makes him him.

I'm so so so so glad that this matched the peak of my expectations, and lands itself squarely in my top five of 2021.
