An already memorable film that improves tenfold on rewatch. This is a dynamite cast that is ready to explode like literal TNT at the drop of a hat and McConaughey has never worn that hat better. He's in full control and strictly means business, at least until his wild side comes to fruition. He's never had a role that utilized these characteristics so assuredly. Friedkin knows exactly how to have his actors go big but stay grounded. Emile Hirsch in particular goes huge from moment one but still brings it back down to Earth when he realizes he is royally fucked and his humanity seeps through. Still one of the best cuts to black and cuts to credit music in recent memory. Friedkin leaves you on such a bizarre high that you just want to go out and conquer the world the way Joe Cooper would.
