Roman Holiday 1953
the first hour and a half of this movie being charming and delightful only to give way to such an utter devastation in the last half hour is a magic trick I’ll never get tired of. When you arrive at the scene wherein Anne leaves to return to the palace and Joe is left in the car, waiting, silently crying, hoping that she’ll turn back but knowing that she won’t…. the heart breaks! And the final scene, where they say goodbye in silence, knowing that so much is unsaid! A beautiful sadness! One of the best pictures ever made.
