Ran ★★★★

Some moments in this film (the siege of the Third Castle, for example, or the killing of Lady Kaede), are transcendent. The battle scenes are just as impressive as those in Kagemusha, made five years before Ran as a sort of "rehearsal" for this film. And yet, for reasons that I am unable to explain, I liked it less than Kagemusha. It is just as grand, just as colorful, just as immersive as the earlier film, and yet I was somewhat frustrated when it ended. It would be a crowning achievement for any other director, but it doesn't quite reach the heights of some of Kurosawa's other films.
