Rye Lane

Rye Lane ★★★★

I honestly thought this year was off to a disappointingly weak start in terms of movies, but March really upped its game and Rye Lane was a great way to close out the month and yet another pleasant surprise. This is a funny, stylish, and extremely energetic romcom with a lot of heart and a terrific pair of leads. Vivian Oparah and David Jonsson are both excellent and the chemistry they share together is extremely natural and heartfelt. Both of their characters feel fully lived in and will be relatable to virtually anyone but especially to those in their 20's facing similar problems. They both have very bright futures ahead of them and their so good you'd think they'd been acting for decades. It's kind of crazy that this is Raine Allen-Miller's feature debut because she's very skilled behind the camera and gives this a very unique and vibrant style. This has a lot of similarities to other romances most notably The Before Trilogy but it feels like its honoring it's influences rather than copying them and still stands out on its own. Like almost any romcom, there's some familiarity and predictability to the plot, and admittedly it did take me a couple minutes to get adjusted to the style especially with how in your face it is at first, but I honestly couldn't recommend this enough whether you're a romcom fan or not. I'd barely even heard about this until a couple days ago but I'm so glad I checked it out.
