Surprisingly might be the funniest movie of the year? I get the feeling this is a pretty personal project for McDonagh and his care for the setting and language really makes the whole thing feel very authentic. Not much needs to be said about Farrell and Gleeson, who are as great as usual and fully utilize their comedic and dramatic skill in equal measure. Kerry Condon is another standout and she gets a lot more to do in this role…

Phone, keys, wallet, gun. An American coastal elite experiences flyover country for the first time, complete with cowboy Ashton Kutcher and plenty of Whataburger, and learns more about himself than about any of the people he meets. This easily could’ve become another annoying and unproductive movie about our current cultural landscape, but BJ Novak keeps it very character focused and knows how to make them easy to care about. Surprisingly considerate for the year 2022.

We can only hope that every generation of Cronenberg continues to be this maniacal. Really only works because everyone is in full commitment to the bit and the SkarsGoth chemistry rules.

You pretty much know what you’re getting into here and I think it mostly delivers the disaster movie goodness in spades. The last 5 minutes is almost unforgivable considering the fantastic ending this could’ve had, but this isn’t the movie where I’m going to let that upset me too much.

Jolly good. Toes the line admirably between parody of and homage to the murder mystery genre. While movies this referential have some unavoidable constraints, this is able to fit nicely into the box it builds for itself. Saoirse Ronan is just delightful and Sam Rockwell and Adrian Brody can always be counted on to elevate any material they’re given. I always love when movies know how to be cheeky and how to avoid dragging things out beyond their logical endpoints. This one does both!

Tiresome and impotent commentary on absolutely nothing at all. Just like it’s protagonist, this movie desperately wants to be important but is instead just annoying and soulless. Also, the climax is a slam poetry session and now there’s a TV-shaped hole in my wall.
